There is freedom of speech, but there are limitations, so be careful – Jerry James Sukah (Papa Jay) cautions young guys on social media

The Communications Director of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Oforikrom Constituency has issued a strong caution to young people, especially those active on social media, to exercise restraint and responsibility in their online expressions.

Speaking on Kessben TV’s Democracy, the NDC communicator emphasized that while Ghana’s 1992 Constitution guarantees freedom of speech, that freedom does not mean people can say whatever they want without consequences.

“Yes, there is freedom of speech in Ghana, but let’s not deceive ourselves, there are limitations,” he said. “The fact that you have a smartphone and data doesn’t mean you can just type anything. Be careful.”

His remarks come at a time when political tensions are rising ahead of the 2024 general elections, with social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and TikTok becoming hotbeds for political commentary, propaganda, and misinformation. Young people, in particular, have taken to these platforms to express their frustrations, support, and sometimes insults, directed at political figures and institutions.

The NDC communicator acknowledged the power and importance of youth voices in national discourse but warned that reckless speech, threats, defamation, or incitement could land people in legal trouble.

“You can criticize policies, you can express your opinions, but once you start insulting leaders, spreading lies, or threatening others, you’re breaking the law. And the law will deal with you.”

Recent arrests and prosecutions of individuals for social media posts deemed threatening or defamatory have sparked public debate about where to draw the line between free speech and criminal conduct.
