No electrician in Ghana, no matter your qualification, is allowed to climb the ECG pole if you are not an official of ECG – ECG warns

The Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti Regional West branch of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Mr. Benjamin Obeng Antwi, has issued a strong warning to electricians and members of the public regarding unauthorized access to ECG infrastructure.
Speaking on Kessben FM, Mr. Obeng Antwi clarified that no electrician in Ghana, regardless of qualification, training, or certification, is permitted to climb ECG poles or tamper with any component of the national power distribution network unless they are officially sanctioned ECG personnel.
“From the pole to the transformer to the meter, if you are not an ECG official, you have no business going near such places,” Mr. Obeng Antwi declared.
The ECG PRO emphasized that this policy is not only a safety measure but also a legal requirement. Unauthorized interference with ECG infrastructure constitutes a breach of national electrical safety regulations and could lead to severe consequences, including electrocution, damage to the power grid, and prosecution.
According to Mr. Obeng Antwi, the ECG has repeatedly encountered cases where private electricians or individuals illegally climb poles or tamper with transformers and meters. These actions not only endanger lives but also disrupt power supply and pose a significant risk to national infrastructure.
Electric power distribution equipment such as poles, transformers, and service meters carry high-voltage electricity, often exceeding thousands of volts. Tampering with them without proper clearance, tools, or safety gear can be fatal.
