BREAKING: ECG offers 6% reward for reporting Illegal electricity connections – Benjamin Obeng Antwi announces

The Public Relations Officer for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti Region/West, Benjamin Obeng Antwi, has announced a bold new incentive aimed at curbing illegal electricity connections.

Speaking on Kessben Maakye with Wofa Kofi Appiah, Mr. Antwi stated that any individual who reports an illegal connection will receive 6% of the total penalty imposed on the offender.

“If you report any illegal connection, we will give you 6% of the penalty fine,” Mr. Antwi disclosed, encouraging residents to actively participate in protecting the national grid from power theft.

Illegal electricity connections have long plagued the ECG, contributing significantly to technical and commercial losses. These unauthorized connections not only drain the company’s revenue but also disrupt the stability of power supply and endanger lives.

The new whistleblower incentive is part of ECG’s broader strategy to clamp down on these illegalities by encouraging community members to become active participants in safeguarding the country’s electricity infrastructure.

According to Mr. Antwi, the move is not just about ECG collecting money; it’s about ensuring fairness. While some customers pay their bills religiously, others are stealing power and damaging the system.

For example, if someone is caught and fined GHS 200,000 for power theft, the whistleblower would receive GHS 2000 as a reward.
