5 persons feared dead following clash between residents of Manso Bonteso, anti-galamsey taskforce

Following a confrontation between Manso Bonteso residents and the Inspector General of Police’s (IGP) special anti-galamsey unit in Bonteso, Ashanti region, five people are believed dead.
This occurred following the taskforce’s seizure of an excavator that was parked in the neighborhood.
According to reports, the team was stoned by the attackers, who were allegedly led by the local assembly member, in an effort to stop them from leaving the area.
Despite warning rounds being fired to disperse the throng, which was primarily composed of neighborhood members, the crowd confronted the officers.
Five people were injured by gunshot wounds. They are presently being admitted to several local hospitals, including Nkawie Government Hospital.
According to community reports, G/Sgt. Agblekpe Mawuena Yao and the team’s leader, ASP Bawah Abdul Jalil, were hurt during the altercation.
However, the Assembly Member Patrick Asare and two other people, Osei Vasco and Akwesi Amponsah, were apprehended by the taskforce.
The authorities regained control of the situation, scattered the hostile mob, and took the confiscated excavator to the Manso Adubia Police Station following a series of warning shots and targeted arrests.
They asserted that because the aforementioned excavator was not discovered at any mining site, the security officers’ actions were illegal.
They voiced worries about recent actions taken by local security authorities against small-scale miners.
Attacking people in their homes could make it more difficult for the government to stop illicit mining.
