Paramount Chief of Agona Nyakrom Calls for Restoration of Chiefs’ Powers

The Paramount Chief of Agona Nyakrom Traditional Area, Okofo Katakyi Nyakoh Eku X, has appealed to politicians, particularly the current administration led by President John Dramani Mahama, to restore the powers of chiefs to their former glory. Speaking at the 2025 Akwanbo Festival, held at Nyakrom Victoria Park, the chief lamented that politicians have eroded the authority of traditional leaders, leading to a breakdown in respect for elders and chiefs among the youth.

The Need for Respect and Authority
Okofo Katakyi Nyakoh Eku X attributed the lack of respect for authority to the diminishing powers of chiefs, citing instances where individuals disregard summons from chiefs due to having lawyers and party affiliations backing them. He urged chiefs to respect themselves and reciprocate respect wherever they are, setting a good example for future generations.

Development Needs of Agona Nyakrom

The Paramount Chief also highlighted the development needs of Agona Nyakrom, including upgrading the local hospital to a polyclinic to address the issue of mixed-gender accommodations. He expressed hope that President Mahama, aware of the hospital’s state, would take action to improve it.

Appeal for District Status

Furthermore, Okofo Katakyi Nyakoh Eku X appealed to the government to grant Agona Nyakrom district status, with Nyakrom as the capital. He argued that the area’s growth in infrastructure, population, and social organization makes it an ideal candidate for a new district, which would bring development and opportunities to the people.

Conclusion

The Paramount Chief’s call for the restoration of chiefs’ powers and development support for Agona Nyakrom underscores the need for collaboration between traditional leaders and government to promote development and respect for authority in the area.
