Traditional Leaders Sign Peace Accord Ahead of 2025 Homowo Festival in Ga West

On August 5, 2025, Chiefs and queen mothers from various communities within the Ga West Municipality have pledged their commitment to peace ahead of the upcoming Homowo festival, scheduled to take place from August 10 to 13, 2025.
In a significant move to prevent past disturbances, traditional leaders from communities including Yahoman, Nsakina, Oduman, Odumase, Papaase, Korleman, Abbeman, Ayikai Doblo, Samsam Odaitteiman, Achiaman, Hebron, and Akramaman gathered at a meeting held at the Ga West Municipal Assembly under the leadership of Hon John Desmond Sowah Nai, where they signed a peace accord. This gesture follows previous incidents where disputes over chieftaincy rights, especially the right to sprinkle the traditional Homowo food, kpokpoi, led to clashes between rival factions.
The meeting, held under the auspices of the Ga West Municipal Assembly, was also attended by heads of the security agencies within the Amasaman Division. Security officials took the opportunity to sensitize the traditional authorities on the measures being put in place to ensure a peaceful celebration.
The peace accord seeks to ensure that all participating communities observe the festival in unity and mutual respect, promoting cultural harmony and community development.
“We are committed to maintaining peace before, during, and after the festival,” a representative of the chiefs stated during the signing ceremony. “Homowo is a time for celebration and thanksgiving, and we must preserve its purpose.”
The Ga West Municipal Assembly and the local security agencies have assured residents of their full support throughout the period and have called on all citizens to cooperate in maintaining calm and order.
The Homowo festival, deeply rooted in the traditions of the Ga people, is celebrated to hoot at hunger and marks a time of harvest and communal solidarity. The renewed commitment to peace among the traditional leaders is expected to foster a safer and more united celebration this year.
