If you can’t keep your cylinder outside your kitchen, make sure the kitchen windows are always open – Obed Boakye, Head of Commercial Regulations at NPA

Obed Boakye, Head of Commercial Regulations at the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), has issued an important safety reminder to the public regarding the use of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) cylinders in homes.

Speaking on Kessben FM, Mr. Boakye emphasized the need for proper ventilation in kitchens where gas cylinders are kept indoors.

“If you can’t keep your cylinder outside your kitchen, make sure the kitchen windows are always opened,” he stated during an interview on Kessben FM’s morning segment. “We are not saying people should not use gas; we are saying use it safely.”

The NPA, as the regulator of the downstream petroleum sector, has been leading a nationwide campaign to promote safe LPG usage, especially in residential settings where safety standards are sometimes overlooked.

Mr. Boakye explained that while it is always preferable and safer to place LPG cylinders outside the kitchen in a well-ventilated enclosure, he understands that space constraints and architectural designs may not make that possible for everyone.

“We know not every home has the luxury of space or the setup to keep cylinders outside. That’s why we strongly advise keeping windows open when cooking with gas inside the kitchen. It allows leaked gas to escape and prevents dangerous accumulation,” he explained.
