Daddy Lumba’s funeral in Kumasi may be the biggest event Ghana has seen in the last ten years – Fante Quoo, Host of Kessben Drive

Fante Quoo has predicted that the upcoming funeral of legendary Ghanaian highlife musician Daddy Lumba could become the biggest national event in the past decade.
Speaking on his show earlier this week, Quoo Fante remarked that the love and reverence Ghanaians have for the music icon transcends regions, political affiliations, and generations, and that his funeral will reflect that overwhelming admiration.
“Mark my words,” he said passionately on air, “Daddy Lumba’s funeral may be the biggest event Ghana has seen in the last ten years. We’re talking about a man whose music shaped lives, inspired love, and defined an era. This won’t be just a funeral, it will be a historic celebration of a cultural hero.”
According to family, the one-week observation for the late highlife legend has been scheduled for August 30, 2025, and will take place in Accra. The main funeral ceremony, however, will be held in Kumasi, his hometown, on a yet-to-be-announced date.
Preparations are already underway for what many expect to be a grand, emotionally charged gathering. Major stakeholders in the music industry, fellow musicians, politicians, cultural leaders, and thousands of fans from across the country, mand the Ghanaian diaspora, are expected to attend.
Born Charles Kwadwo Fosu, Daddy Lumba rose to fame in the 1980s and became a household name across Africa and beyond. With an unmatched catalogue of hits such as “Aben Wo Ha,” “Theresa,” “Yentie Obiaa,” and “Playboy,” he redefined Ghanaian highlife, blending modern sounds with traditional rhythms and deeply emotional storytelling.
Over the decades, he amassed dozens of awards and accolades, and many have referred to him as the greatest Ghanaian musician of all time. His influence on both music and culture is so profound that his lyrics and image continue to resonate with both old and young generations.
Social media has been buzzing with reactions since the news of his passing broke, and now with funeral arrangements becoming public, anticipation is reaching a fever pitch.
Thousands of fans have already vowed to attend the one-week observation and eventual burial in Kumasi. Major cities are preparing for large gatherings, while fan groups are organizing tributes, music nights, and memorial parades in Daddy Lumba’s honor.
