If you can’t help your in-laws, you don’t steal from them – Former deputy Agric Minister Hon. Yaw Frimpong Addo accuses NDC of deceiving cocoa farmers over price promise

Former Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. Yaw Frimpong Addo, has strongly criticized the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for what he describes as “a clear case of deception” regarding the recent increase in the producer price of cocoa.

Speaking on Kessben FM Accra with Kwadwo Preko Darkwah, the former minister expressed disappointment over the NDC’s announcement that the producer price of cocoa has been raised from GHC3,100 to GHC3,228.75 per 64-kilogram bag, a move he says falls far short of the GHC6,000 per bag the party promised cocoa farmers during the 2024 election campaign.

“This is not what the NDC promised cocoa farmers. They went around the country assuring farmers that they would increase the price to GHC6,000 per bag. Now that they are in government, they’ve added just this. That is not just a disappointment, it’s deception,” Hon. Frimpong Addo stated.

Hon. Frimpong Addo, who served under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, warned that the cocoa sector could lose trust in leadership if political parties continue to make campaign promises they do not intend to keep.

He further accused the NDC of using the cocoa pricing issue to score political points before the election, only to backtrack once in power.

The recent increment per bag represents a modest rise in the face of rising inflation, high input costs, and global economic uncertainty. Farmers and observers say it does not match the financial reality they face on the ground.

During the 2024 campaign season, several high-ranking NDC officials publicly touted the GHC6,000 per bag promise, claiming it would be a game-changer for cocoa farmers. That message resonated in cocoa-growing regions and became a major pillar of the party’s rural campaign.
