MPs for Asante Akim South and North bemoan deteriorating Accra-Kumasi road in Parliament, call for urgent action

The Members of Parliament, Kwaku Asante-Boateng, MP for Asante Akim South, and Hon. Frimpong Kwame Ohene, MP for Asante Akim North, raised alarm over the worsening state of the Accra-Kumasi highway, a major national route that continues to claim lives due to years of neglect.
Speaking passionately on the floor of Parliament, the MPs decried the crumbling infrastructure, frequent accidents, and the slow pace of rehabilitation works on what is considered Ghana’s busiest and most economically significant highway.
His colleague, Hon. Frimpong Kwame Ohene, echoed the concerns and emphasized the devastating human cost associated with the inaction.
The Accra-Kumasi highway connects the national capital to the Ashanti Regional capital and beyond, facilitating trade, movement of goods, and inter-regional commuting. However, years of wear and tear, coupled with poor road maintenance, have turned it into a danger zone. Potholes stretch across major portions of the road, traffic congestion is a daily nightmare, and road signs are either missing or unreadable.
The MPs cited recent accidents, including the tragic incident that claimed the lives of 15 children from the Saviour Church over the weekend, as glaring examples of how the deteriorated road has become a deathtrap.
Both MPs criticized what they described as the piecemeal and politicized approach to road infrastructure, warning that communities in the Ashanti Region are beginning to lose faith in government promises.
They called on the Ministry of Roads and Highways, the Ghana Highway Authority, and the Executive to prioritize the road and provide a clear, time-bound action plan for its complete rehabilitation.
Following their impassioned statements, the Speaker of Parliament acknowledged the urgency of the matter and directed the Roads and Transport Committee to engage with the appropriate ministries and agencies to provide updates within the coming weeks.
