As the Kotoko National Supporters election approaches, Mr. Obeng Sekyere, aspirant for the chairmanship position, has responded to allegations leveled against him. In an interview with Kessben Sports, he addressed concerns about his tenure, financial management, and commitment to the club.
Tenure and Support:
Mr. Sekyere emphasized his coordination with the Regional Circles Council, stating, “I enjoy support from all regions, unlike my opponents.” He attributed this support to his former role as Ashanti Regional Circles Chairman, adding, “This presupposes that virtually the entire national membership is rooting behind me,” he added.
Financial Management:
Mr. Sekyere explained that after his tenure, an interim committee took over, and his financial secretary, JJ, handled finances. JJ presented approximately Gh¢17,000 with expenses totaling Gh¢10,000. Mr. Sekyere handed over Gh¢7,000 from JJ and banking details of Gh¢8,370 welfare contributions.
RCC Office:
Mr. Sekyere denied using the Ashanti Regional Circle Council’s office for personal gain, stating that he bore the costs (over GH¢60,000) of renting and furnishing the office.
Nana Kwame’s ‘Academic Edge’ Comments: Responding to Nana Kwame Dankwa’s mantra, “vote for someone who’s endowed academically,” Mr. Sekyere had this to say, “Nana Kwame Dankwa’s comment on my academic edge and knowledge in leadership shouldn’t be misconstrued because in elections, every candidate looks for a competitive advantage to win more points.”
He further noted that leadership experience and academic edge are equally important competitive advantages, as his opponents have also preferred to hide behind the tool of wealth.
Claims of Chartered Accountant status: Mr. Sekyere debunked claims that he’s a chartered accountant, stating that he is currently in the process of attaining the qualification though.
Circles Constitution:
Mr. Sekyere advocated for amendments to the Kotoko Circles Constitution, including additional grounds for admission of members, and
removal beyond embezzlement.
FabuCensus:
On FabuCensus, Mr. Sekyere expressed his support, saying, “FabuCensus is a brilliant idea and must be encouraged and participated in by all supporters.” He revealed that he was the first to initiate supporters’ database registration with his personal money upon MTN’s advice. He had about 10,000 supporters before JimaTech introduced the nation-wide idea, FabuCensus, which he described as the “life-blood” of the club.
Vision:
Mr. Sekyere outlined his vision:
1. Increase FabuCensus paid-up membership from 25,000 to 1 million.
2. Organize annual workshops for leaders and supporters.
3. Allocate Baba Yara Sports Stadium stands to community-based groups with a special award scheme.
4. Collaborate with management to allocate sponsorship funds for supporter mobilization.
With his experience and plans, Mr. Obeng Sekyere is confident in leading the Kotoko National Supporters to greater heights. Time will tell. August 24 is just around the corner.
