Federation of African Youth Development Engages Deputy Agric Minister on Youth Empowerment

In a move to strengthen youth involvement in agriculture, representatives from the Federation of African Youth Development paid a courtesy call on Hon. John Dumelo, Deputy Minister of Agriculture, on Monday, July 28, 2025, at his office in Accra.
The engagement formed part of the Federation’s ongoing advocacy to deepen dialogue between youth organizations and government institutions, with a focus on shaping inclusive policies that benefit young people across Africa.
During the meeting, both parties discussed the critical role agriculture plays in national development and the urgent need to make the sector attractive to Ghana’s growing youth population.
Hon. Dumelo stressed the untapped potential of youth in agriculture and emphasized the importance of changing perceptions around farming. He encouraged young people to adopt innovative, technology-driven approaches to transform agriculture into a viable and appealing career path.
The Deputy Minister also shed light on the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to enhance value addition in the agricultural sector. He highlighted initiatives such as agro-processing support, farmer-based enterprise development, and the strengthening of local value chains aimed at improving the marketability of Ghanaian produce both locally and internationally.
A key part of the discussion focused on building sustainable collaboration between the Ministry and youth-led organizations. Hon. Dumelo expressed strong interest in partnerships that provide young agro-entrepreneurs with access to capacity-building programs, financing mechanisms, and mentorship opportunities.
Reaffirming its commitment, the Federation of African Youth Development praised the Ministry’s youth-centered vision and pledged to support programs that equip young people with the tools and opportunities needed to thrive in agriculture.
The meeting concluded with a mutual agreement to hold follow-up engagements aimed at formalizing partnerships and identifying practical steps to increase youth participation across the agricultural value chain.
