Preserving Heritage, Shaping Future: Gonja Monarch’s Historic Visit to Ghana’s Seat of Government

President of the Republic of Ghana H.E John Dramani Mahama on Monday 29th July, 2025 at presidency welcomed the , King and Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom and Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale (I), emphasizing the critical role of traditional leadership in Ghana’s constitutional democracy.

“This occasion goes beyond protocol,” the President stated. “It is a reaffirmation of the unity and shared destiny that binds our people together.”

The President praised the Gonja kingdom’s leadership, highlighting the overlord Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale (I), commitment to peace, regional development, and national cohesion. He specifically commended recent diplomatic efforts, including a notable royal visit between the Gonja and Dagbon kingdoms that symbolized inter-regional unity.

“Your Majesty has shown exceptional leadership marked by humility, cultural stewardship, and a deep commitment to peace and progress,” President Mahama said.

Speaking personally, the President described himself as a “proud son of Gonja land,” emphasizing how the region’s core values of respect, courage, service, and justice continue to shape his leadership and public service.

The visit underscores Ghana’s unique approach to governance, where traditional and constitutional leadership work in harmony to drive national development and preserve cultural heritage.

The event was seen as a significant moment of cultural diplomacy and national unity.

President of Ghana H.E John Dramani Mahama unveiled an ambitious development plan for the Savannah Region, focusing on critical infrastructure and social services.

“The Savannah region is rich in history and natural potential, and is strategically placed in Ghana’s transformation agenda,” President Mahama stated, highlighting the region’s importance.

He mentioned key priorities include addressing water security, with the Damango water supply project identified as the top initiative. “In the 21st Century, we will ensure the swift and sustainable delivery of clean water, not only to Damango, but to surrounding communities,” He stated.

President Mahama maintained that, healthcare development is another critical focus, with plans to establish a fully equipped regional hospital in Damango.

“We are committed to establishing regional hospitals in all six new regional regions,” He assured , noting the facility will serve as a critical referral center for the region.

The development plan reflects a commitment to community-led growth, addressing longstanding infrastructure needs in communities from Bole to Daboya, and Damango to Salaga.
