Late Daddy Lumba’s Wish Revealed: “Build something monumental, a statue, a museum, or a music center for me in Kumasi” – PRO reveals on Kessben FM
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the late legendary Ghanaian musician Daddy Lumba’s official fan club, Yaw Sonogo has disclosed a previously unknown wish of the iconic artist: to have a monumental statue or structure built in his honor in Kumasi.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on Kessben FM with Fante Quoo, the PRO said, “One of Lumba’s deepest desires was for something monumental, a statue, a museum, or a music center, to be built for him right here in Kumasi, the city that shaped so much of who he became.”
Daddy Lumba, born Charles Kwadwo Fosu, passed away earlier this year, leaving behind a musical legacy that spans more than three decades. Known for timeless highlife hits and his influence on multiple generations of Ghanaian artists, Lumba’s roots in the Ashanti Region, particularly Kumasi, played a key role in shaping his artistic journey..
“He always felt Kumasi was more than a city to him,” the PRO explained. “It was home, it was inspiration, it was love. He wanted that connection immortalized, and he told us privately many times that Kumasi should be the place where his story is permanently etched in stone.”
“This is not just about a statue,” said a fan during a phone-in segment on Kessben FM. “This is about Ghana acknowledging one of its greatest musical exports in a meaningful way — in the city he loved.”
There are growing suggestions for a Daddy Lumba Museum or Music Hall to serve not only as a tribute but also as a tourist attraction and educational center for highlife music and Ghanaian arts.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has yet to release an official statement regarding the call, but sources within the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council indicate that discussions may be underway. Several private individuals and music industry stakeholders have also expressed interest in supporting such a project.
