From Infrastructure to Agriculture: Mahama Unveils Plans for Savannah Region

During the royal visit to Jubilee House by the King and Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom and Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale (I) on Monday, 29th July, 2025, Ghana’s President H.E John Dramani Mahama revealed an ambitious agricultural development strategy for the Savannah region, positioning agriculture as the “backbone of the savannah region” and a critical driver of economic growth.
“Agriculture is the backbone of the savannah region,” President Mahama , outlining a multi-faceted approach to agricultural development that includes comprehensive support for farmers and agricultural value chains.
In order to enhance agricultural productivity in the Northern parts of Ghana, President Mahama highlighted key agricultural initiatives include:
– Establishment of mechanization centers to support farmers
– Creation of farmer service centers
– Input subsidies for agricultural production
– Irrigation schemes along the White and Black Volta rivers
– Agro-processing hubs in Bamboi, Damango, Salaga, and Buipe
The President specifically highlighted focus crops, mentioning the plan will provide “special attention to share nuts, cashew, rice, soya and maize value chains, creating jobs and boosting exports.”
“We’ll support farmers through mechanization centers,” he emphasized, noting that “Savannah is going to get its fair share of the farmer service centers to support farmers in their agricultural production.”
The development plan also includes establishing agricultural skills training centers and supporting youth cooperatives in agribusiness, aligning with the National 24-hour economy strategy.
“No child in Savannah region should be left behind,” President proclaimed, indicating that agricultural development is part of a broader vision of inclusive economic opportunity.
The agricultural strategy represents a comprehensive approach to transforming the Savannah region’s economic landscape, positioning agriculture as a key driver of regional development and youth employment.
The royal visit provided a platform to showcase this ambitious agricultural transformation plan, emphasizing the government’s commitment to supporting farmers and creating sustainable economic opportunities in the region.
