Peacemaking approach must be deployed in Bawku conflict – Dr. Sadiq Adutwum urges

Renowned security analyst Dr. Sadiq Adutwum has called for an urgent shift in the government’s strategy to resolve the protracted Bawku conflict, urging stakeholders to adopt a robust peacemaking approach rather than relying solely on military intervention.

Speaking during an interview on Kessben FM, Dr. Adutwum emphasized that the persistent instability in the Upper East town of Bawku demands more than force, it requires a comprehensive peacebuilding framework grounded in dialogue, empathy, and inclusivity.

The Bawku conflict, deeply rooted in chieftaincy disputes between the Mamprusi and Kusasi ethnic groups, has simmered for decades, flaring into deadly violence at various points despite numerous attempts at mediation. The government’s strategy in recent years has leaned heavily on security operations, deploying military forces to maintain order and deter violence.

He argued that while military presence may offer temporary calm, it does little to tackle the root causes of the conflict, which include historical grievances, land disputes, and socio-political marginalization.

Dr. Adutwum proposed a multi-layered peacemaking approach involving traditional leaders, youth groups, civil society organizations, religious bodies, and government representatives. He called for sustained dialogue forums, truth and reconciliation initiatives, and confidence-building measures that can lead to long-term coexistence.

The security expert challenged the government to invest in peace infrastructure just as it does in defense.

He also urged community leaders to refrain from inflammatory rhetoric and instead play active roles as agents of peace. The media, he noted, must avoid sensationalism and serve as a bridge for reconciliation and truth-telling.
