As of today, no one has cited a law against the removal of Chief Justice Torkornoo – Dr. Isaac Tuffour

Communications team member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Isaac Tuffour, has waded into the removal of Ghana’s Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo.

According to Dr. Tuffour, while conversations around the possibility of removing a sitting Chief Justice are often met with strong resistance, there is a lack of clear legal grounding that outrightly prevents such action under Ghana’s current constitutional framework.

“As of today, no one has been able to state one law which stands against the removal of the Chief Justice Torkornoo” He said.

Dr. Tuffour speaking on Kessben FM, acknowledged that the removal of a Chief Justice is a serious and constitutionally sensitive matter, but stressed that mechanisms exist within the law for addressing misconduct or abuse of office, even at the highest levels of the judiciary.

Meanwhile, some argue that while removal is legally possible, suggesting it without clear grounds risks undermining the independence of the judiciary.
