Beyond Nkrumah’s Dream: Lands Minister Unveils Ghana’s Bold Plan to Dominate Global Mineral Markets

Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon.Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah has stated that, Ghana is set to transform its mineral resources through ambitious plans in the steel and aluminum sectors, with highlighting the transformative potential of these initiatives.

“The Ghana integrated iron and steel Development Corporation(GIISDEC), holds key potential for our country,” said Hon. Armah-Kofi Buah, emphasizing the corporation’s role in regulating the scrap metal industry.

Speaking during the Government Accountability Series today at the Presidency, Lands Minister noted that, the Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation has already secured three licenses covering 397.5 square kilometers for the Sheini Iron Ore Project, with promising exploration results from multiple blocks.

Turning to the aluminum sector, the Lands Minister noted that GIADEC is committed to “unlocking the full potential of Ghana’s bauxite reserves.” The corporation has secured six bauxite mining leases, with plans to extract 2 million metric cubic tons annually.

“These efforts align with Ghana’s vision to become a global player in the integrated aluminum industry,” the minister stated, underlining the strategic importance of the project.

He added that, key infrastructure developments are also in the pipeline, including a proposed 250-kilometer railway for bauxite transport and Takoradi port expansion.

He said, the initiative carries deep historical significance, with the minister noting that the project aims to “fulfil the dream long envisioned by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.”

He underscored President Mahama’s commitment to continues to provide strong support for these transformative projects, signalling a new era of industrial development for Ghana.

Strategic highlights include:

– Three iron ore project licenses secured

– Six bauxite mining leases pending approval

– Plans for 250-kilometer railway infrastructure

– Potential for significant economic transformation
