Kevin Taylor’s arrest warrant squashed by the Supreme Court –  Details

In a 4-1 majority ruling, the Supreme Court struck down an arrest warrant that had been issued against social commentator Kelvin Taylor.

Justice Imoro Amadu Tanko presided over the Supreme Court panel that decided the case today, July 22.

The other judges were Justice Ernest Gaewu (the sole dissident judge), Justice Senyo Dzamefe, Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh, and Justice Philip Bright Mensah.

Following the delivery of the verdict, Kelvin Taylor was seen leaving the courthouse with his head held high while accompanied by his attorneys.

Mr. Taylor has been a well-known, although divisive, character in public debate because of his frequently contentious and outspoken comments on Ghanaian political and social issues, mostly through his online platform ‘With All Due Respect’.

The reason for the revoked arrest warrant is a contempt of court accusation brought against him, namely by Court of Appeal Justice Eric Kyei-Baffour, who is also a High Court justice.

In January 2020, the High Court issued an arrest warrant for Taylor, claiming that he had made “extremely scandalous” and disrespectful remarks against the court and the Ghanaian judiciary.

In a current case involving the National Communications Authority, Justice Kyei-Baffour had specifically accused Taylor of scandalizing the court by claiming that his promotion was connected to carrying out the then-government’s wishes.
