JB Afrifa ESQ urges creatives to engage legal counsel before signing any deal, delves deep into copyright laws & more

Ghanaian lawyer and creative industry advocate, JB Afrifa Esq, has issued a strong advisory to creatives in the country, urging them to seek legal counsel before entering into any agreements, regardless of the deal’s perceived value.

Speaking on Kessben TV’s Music Plus hosted by Mr. Bonez, JB Afrifa emphasized that musicians, producers, actors, photographers, and content creators must treat contracts and intellectual property matters with the seriousness they deserve.

According to the legal expert, many creatives unknowingly sign unfavorable or exploitative contracts, largely due to the absence of legal guidance. It doesn’t matter if it’s a GH₵500 deal or a GH₵500,000 one,  every agreement can have long-term implications. A lawyer’s review can make all the difference.

He pointed out that failing to involve a legal professional often leads to rights disputes, income losses, and brand damage that could have been easily avoided.

JB Afrifa also touched on a growing area of concern in Ghana’s creative industry: the legal risks associated with published content. He warned content creators to be mindful of the increasing number of legal cases involving defamation, copyright infringement, and the misuse of intellectual property.

He underscored the broader impact of legal compliance within the creative ecosystem. He argued that when creatives prioritize legality and protect their rights, it not only secures their careers but also contributes to a more professional, attractive, and investable creative economy in Ghana.
