Ewurabena Aubynn Sworn in as Ablekuma North MP Despite Minority Walkout

Honourable Ewurabena Aubynn, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament-elect for Ablekuma North, has been officially sworn in as the Member of Parliament for the constituency. The swearing-in ceremony, presided over by Speaker Alban Bagbin, took place on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, despite a walkout by the Minority side in Parliament.
The walkout was triggered by a disagreement over procedure, with Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh seeking to make a statement before the oath was administered. However, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga opposed the move, insisting that the appropriate time for such remarks would be after the swearing-in ceremony. Speaker Bagbin sided with the Majority Leader, prompting the Minority to boycott the ceremony.
Aubynn won the parliamentary rerun election held on July 11, 2025, with 34,090 votes, narrowly defeating her New Patriotic Party (NPP) rival, Akua Afriyie, who garnered 33,881 votes. Her swearing-in gives the NDC a two-thirds majority in the 275-member House, significantly shifting the legislative balance of power and positioning the party to steer constitutional amendments and push through major policy reforms.
After the ceremony, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga assured Ghanaians of the NDC’s commitment to ensuring the two-thirds majority is put to good use.
The rerun election was necessitated by the Electoral Commission’s decision to nullify the original December 2024 parliamentary results due to allegations of electoral irregularities, including unsigned pink sheets and discrepancies in vote tallies. The NPP initially declared a boycott of the rerun but Akua Afriyie opted to participate, citing her duty to protect her mandate.
