Strong boardroom accountability very important for institutional success – Chief of Staff

Julius Debrah, the chief of staff, has underlined how critical it is that board members approach their positions with courage, strategic acumen, and a thorough comprehension of the missions of their organizations. According to him, board-level governance needs to shift from ceremonial presence to effective leadership that can advance Ghana’s development objectives.

Mr. Debrah said this when the organizer and attendees of the second Boardroom Governance Summit, which is set for October in Accra, paid him a courtesy call at the Jubilee House. The conference aims to encourage institutional accountability across industries and restart the national dialogue on boardroom leadership.

On behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, the Chief of Staff welcomed the group and reiterated government support for the summit, calling it a timely intervention that supports the President’s goal of demystifying the presidency and advancing reforms in the public sector.

“President Mahama believes leadership must be transparent and accessible. That’s why this initiative is so important, because it brings key conversations about accountability, integrity, and leadership right to our national doorstep,” Mr. Debrah said.

“We sometimes get too comfortable with routines,” he said. “If board members do not fully understand the power they hold to direct and shape their institutions, then those institutions will crumble under the weight of poor decisions or no decisions at all.”

“Being on a board isn’t about status, it’s about responsibility. You are the architects of institutional success. The directions you give shape management actions, and ultimately determine whether your organization thrives or fails.” He added.
