Health Minister Unveils Ambitious Healthcare Transformation Agenda

Speaking during the Government Accountability Series at the Presidency, Ghana’s Health Minister Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akando has delivered highlighted the government’s comprehensive healthcare strategy, emphasizing unprecedented investments and systemic reforms.
“Today, 15.6 million Ghanaians are enrolled in the National Health Insurance Scheme, an increase of about 670,000 from last year,” the minister proclaimed, underscoring significant expansion of healthcare coverage.
He underscored ground-breaking initiative called “Mahama Cares” promises to revolutionize non-communicable disease treatment. “With an annual budget of approximately 3 billion Ghana cedis, it will provide essential specialist care, such as chemotherapy, services that go beyond what the National Health Insurance currently covers,” The minister explained.
According to him, the government is also addressing critical workforce challenges. “We have successfully finalized the employment process of over 10,000 nurses and midwives, with many more to come,” the minister stated, acknowledging the ongoing challenge of unemployed health professionals.
He mentioned the infrastructure development, the minister emphasized, “We have released funding to every district assembly to support the construction of at least two new health facilities each year, bringing quality health services closer to communities.”
The presentation also revealed ambitious plans for medical innovation. “We are committed to making Ghana a center for pharmaceutical manufacturing,” the minister declared, noting that a private sector partner has already obtained authorization to produce snake anti-venom serum commercially.
“These actions are not just plans on paper. They are the foundation of a healthier, stronger Ghana, today, and for generations to come,” The minister concluded, signalling a transformative approach to national healthcare.
The comprehensive strategy demonstrates Ghana’s commitment to universal health coverage, workforce development, and healthcare infrastructure improvement.
