NDC introduced vigilantism in the history of Ghana elections, and we the NPP later showed them that we can also be violent – Alhaji Abdul Basit

A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Abdul Basit, claims the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was the first to introduce political vigilantism into Ghana’s electoral system.

Speaking on Kessben FM, Alhaji Basit stated that the NPP only responded in kind after years of provocation and intimidation by NDC-aligned groups.

While acknowledging the sensitive nature of his comments, Alhaji Basit insisted that the NPP’s actions were in response to years of political aggression by the NDC.

“They used macho men, they attacked our people, and for years we remained quiet. But eventually, we had to defend ourselves. That’s the truth,” he asserted.

Both the NPP and the NDC have in the past pledged to disband vigilante groups associated with their parties following high-profile incidents, but the act still persists

Calls are growing louder for political parties to recommit to peace and engage in issue-based campaigning rather than resorting to inflammatory language and historical blame games.
