Ghana drills 160,000 barrels of crude oil daily, but use 70,000 barrels daily, which are imported, Gov’t has to revive TOR to refine our own oil – Dr Appiah Konadu

Dr. Paul Appiah Konadu has called on the Government of Ghana to urgently revive the operations of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), citing the nation’s daily crude oil production as more than sufficient to meet its domestic fuel needs.

Speaking in an interview on Kessben FM, Dr. Konadu expressed concern over Ghana’s continued dependence on imported refined petroleum products, despite being an oil-producing country. He revealed that Ghana currently drills approximately 160,000 barrels of crude oil per day, yet imports around 70,000 barrels of refined products daily to meet local consumption..

He described the situation as economically unsustainable and urged policymakers to take bold steps to restore the operations of the Tema Oil Refinery, which has been largely inactive in recent years due to mismanagement, operational inefficiencies, and financial constraints.

Dr. Konadu believes that revamping TOR would not only reduce Ghana’s reliance on imported fuel but also save the country millions of dollars in foreign exchange, create jobs, and stabilize fuel prices.

According to him, a functional refinery would give Ghana greater control over its energy resources and shield the country from global fuel price volatility.

Established in 1963, the Tema Oil Refinery has been Ghana’s main oil processing facility. However, the refinery has struggled to stay operational in recent years due to outdated infrastructure, huge debts, and alleged corruption scandals. Its shutdown has forced Ghana to rely heavily on imported refined petroleum, exposing the country to supply chain disruptions and rising global prices.
