Tax waivers and security for businesses should be highly considered for NDC’s 24-hour economy to thrive – Dr. Seyram Kawor

Dr. Seyram Kawor, Senior Lecturer at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) Business School, has urged policymakers to provide tax incentives and bolster security measures to enable the NDC) proposed 24‑hour economy to succeed.

Speaking on Kessben FM, he emphasized that both fiscal relief and safety infrastructure are vital to extending business operations beyond traditional hours.

The 24-hour economy proposes continuous operation across sectors like hospitality, retail, transport, and fuel stations in three shifts, designed to spur productivity, create jobs, and attract investment. While the idea has gained traction under President John Mahama’s administration, Dr. Kawor cautions that practical implementation hinges on supportive policies

Highlighting a major hurdle, Dr. Kawor pointed out that many businesses, including fuel stations, previously withdrew from night shifts due to safety concerns, underscoring the importance of security in enabling round-the-clock operations. He noted

He stressed that this model encourages broader participation, from private security providers to local communities, to collaborate in safeguarding business districts.

Dr. Kawor argued that tax relief is essential to reduce the operational burden on businesses adapting to extended hours. He endorsed proposals to exempt startups from corporate or personal income tax during their initial years and offer targeted incentives for night‑shift operations, aligning with strategies outlined in the NDC’s policy framework .
