NLA Donates GHC 100,000 to Support Victims of Sea Tidal Waves

The National Lotteries Authority (NLA) On Monday 30th June 2025 made a donation of GHC 100,000 to support the victims of sea tidal waves in the Volta Region. The donation was made through the Regional Minister, Honorable James Gunu, who was accompanied by the Municipal Chief Executive of Ketu South Municipal Assembly, Mr. Nicholas Kwabla Worclachie, along with some assembly members as part of the NLA’s corporate social responsibility initiative.

Mohammed Abdul-Salam, Director General of the NLA, explained that the organization decided to make the donation as a show of empathy and support for the affected communities. “We have chosen to show our good face with some 100,000 Ghana Cedis to support the process,” he said. Despite the amount being woefully inadequate compared to the magnitude of the challenge, the NLA hopes that the gesture will bring some relief to the victims.

The Director General acknowledged that the NLA’s contribution is just a drop in the ocean and encouraged other organizations and individuals to join in supporting the affected communities. “If we can do more in that direction, we’d be happy to receive that call,” he added.

Honorable James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister, expressed gratitude to the NLA for their timely intervention. “We are most grateful for this intervention,” he said. “It will go a long way in supporting the victims.” The minister noted that the devastation caused by the sea erosion has been ongoing since 2015, with over 1,200 people displaced and economic activities severely impacted.

The minister recalled that the government had initiated the Sea Defense project in 2015, but it stalled due to a change in administration. Recently, the current President visited the area and pledged to allocate funds for the construction of Phase Two of the Sea Defense project, which will provide a permanent solution to the devastation.

The Volta Regional Coordinating Council, led by the minister, had made appeals to various organizations for support. The NLA’s donation is a welcome relief, and the minister expressed deep gratitude for their generosity. “The support will go a long way in addressing the immediate needs of the affected communities, including food, shelter, and clothing,” he said.

The minister emphasized that the sea erosion has had a significant impact on the livelihoods of the people in the affected communities, particularly in Asalako. The displacement of over 1,200 people has resulted in a humanitarian crisis, with many struggling to access basic necessities.

The NLA’s donation is a commendable effort to support the victims of sea erosion in the Volta Region. The organization’s efforts to support the affected communities are appreciated, and it is hoped that others will follow their example. The government’s commitment to completing the Sea Defense project will provide a permanent solution to the devastation, while the NLA’s intervention will help alleviate the suffering of the affected communities in the short term.

The NLA Good Causes Foundation is the Authority’s charity arm, spearheading its corporate social responsibility. The Foundation operates on four pillars: Health, Education, Youth and Sports Development, and Arts and Culture. It is hinged on Section 2(3) of the National Lotto Act, which mandates the NLA to conduct, as part of the operation of National Lotto, a lottery to provide care and protection for the physically or mentally afflicted, the needy, the aged, orphans, and destitute children.
