Emergency Teams Deployed to Restore Power in Obuasi – Deputy Minister

The Deputy Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. Richard Gyan Mensah, has assured residents of Obuasi and surrounding communities that emergency teams have been deployed to restore power following the devastating fire that affected key energy infrastructure in the area.
During a working visit on Saturday, June 28, 2025, the Deputy Minister toured the GRIDCo and ECG substations in Obuasi, which were gutted by fire on May 21, leading to a widespread blackout across Obuasi, New Edubiase, and neighboring towns.
The inspection was conducted at the request of the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, and brought together key stakeholders, including the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Dr. Frank Amoakohene, Hon. Kweku Kwarteng, MP for Obuasi West, Hon. Faustilove Appiah Kanin, MCE for Obuasi Municipal, and Hon. Kofi Adzowu, MCE for Obuasi East.
Briefing the delegation, engineers from the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) revealed that the fire had caused extensive damage to critical infrastructure, including transformers, underground cables, and the control room.
However, the Deputy Minister confirmed that emergency teams are currently working around the clock to restore electricity to the affected areas. He stated that temporary power supply is expected to be fully restored by Thursday, July 3, 2025, while efforts to implement a permanent technical fix are already underway.
“We are fully aware of the hardship this outage has caused residents and businesses,” Hon. Gyan Mensah said. “The government is treating this situation with the utmost urgency, and I can assure the public that power will return soon, thanks to the dedicated teams working on-site.”
In addition to restoration efforts, the Deputy Minister emphasized that the government will strengthen security at key power installations nationwide to prevent similar incidents in the future.
“We are putting in place robust security and monitoring systems at all major substations and transmission points. Our goal is to not only restore power but to protect our infrastructure from future risks,” he noted.
He also expressed appreciation to the residents for their patience and cooperation, and assured that the Ministry of Energy remains committed to ensuring reliable and uninterrupted power supply across Ghana.
The visit forms part of broader efforts by the government to respond swiftly to energy-related emergencies and to reinforce the resilience of the national power grid.
