Dishonesty by some Ghanaian businessmen led Chinese & Lebanese to open their own stores & actively get involved in mining and others – Nana Biribireba Boateng

Nana Biribireba Boateng, the Chief Executive Officer of Christal Mining Consult, has raised serious concerns about the growing dominance of foreign nationals, particularly Chinese and Lebanese, in key sectors of Ghana’s economy, including retail and small-scale mining.
Speaking on Kessben FM, Nana Biribireba attributed this trend partly to dishonesty and unethical practices by some Ghanaian businessmen.
According to him, the failure of some local entrepreneurs to conduct business with integrity has not only eroded trust but has also created an opening for foreign nationals to establish their own retail stores and mining operations across the country.
Nana Biribireba emphasized that many foreign investors had no intention of directly engaging in grassroots business activities when they first arrived in Ghana. However, after experiencing repeated instances of dishonest dealings, they opted to bypass Ghanaian middlemen altogether and set up independent operations, often outcompeting the locals.
Over the past decade, there has been a noticeable increase in foreign involvement in small-scale mining (galamsey), retail trade, especially in electronics and building materials, and construction. This has triggered tensions in some communities, as local traders and small-scale miners find themselves displaced or outcompeted by better-resourced foreign businesses.
He urged business owners to rebuild trust through integrity, accountability, and fair dealings. He also stressed the need for stricter regulation and enforcement by authorities to prevent illegal foreign operations, while encouraging support for genuine Ghanaian businesses.
