NPP Woes: In the last 12-15 years, people who do not deserve to come close to the party leadership bought votes to be there – Dr. Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe

Speaking in an exlusive interview on Kessben FM, Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, one of the founding fathers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), issued a strong critique of internal party politics, stating that over the past 12–15 years, individuals who lack merit have ascended to leadership positions within the party by purchasing votes.

He stressed that the practice has become deeply entrenched, not only in national elections but also in internal party primaries, where hard-earned merit is being displaced by monetary influence. He argued that such normalization poses a grave threat to democratic integrity and the party’s long-term legitimacy.

He cautioned that once individuals accustomed to using money for influence dominate legislative bodies or party leadership, accountability vanishes.

Dr Nyaho‑Tamakloe urged the NPP to confront this issue head-on. Leaders must stop complacency, enforce internal disciplinary standards, and ensure that party positions are filled through transparent, merit-based processes.

If unchecked, Dr Nyaho‑Tamakloe warns, the ripple effect of vote-buying will degrade the calibre of political leadership across Ghana. Constituents will lose faith in their representatives, creating fertile ground for corruption, poor policymaking, and voter apathy.
