Telecel Ghana, a subsidiary of the Telecel Group, has reacted to a lawsuit filed by a popular onion seller at ‘KwasiaDwaso’ near Makola Market, Madam Faustina Djagbele Abbey.

In a statement chanced upon by Nydjlive.com, captioned Re: Legal Claim Over Alleged Unauthorized Use of Photograph, the telecommunication company acknowledged the media reports.

The company further stated that it is “currently reviewing the details of this claim to establish the facts.”

As initially reported by Nydjlive.com on June 16, 2025, Madam Faustina Djagbele Abbey, through her legal counsel Bernard Owiredu Donkor of Thompson Law Consult, sued telecommunications company Telecel Ghana for allegedly using her photograph without her consent.

In a statement of claim, the plaintiff (Mad. Faustina Djagbele Abbey) stated that her photograph was used as the face for projecting, advertising, and marketing a product known as the “Telecel Red Save”, a digital savings account with the Telecel Cash Platform, which allows users to save money and earn interest without her consent.

According to her, this was brought to her attention sometime in February 2025 when some of her customers started complimenting her for her appearances on traditional media, billboards, and social media.

She states that, around that same time, some of her neighbours, including her church members, started greeting her with amusement.

She further stated that her colleague market women and other persons around began demanding various sums of money from her, indicating she is now a rich woman.

Among other reliefs, Mad. Faustina Djagbele Abbey is seeking from the High Court a declaratory order directed at Telecel Ghana to pay an amount of GHC 2,000,000.00 as compensation for breaches of her “privacy” and “personal liberties” and also that billboards, social media and traditional media advertisements of the “Telecel Red Save” be pulled down.
