Odotobri MP Lawyer Anthony Mmieh hits hard for free Press and public accountability during vetting of justices

During the parliamentary vetting of Supreme Court nominee Justice Dzamefe, Odotobri Member of Parliament and Vice Chair of the Judiciary Committee, Lawyer Anthony Mmieh, stressed the importance of a free press and public accountability in Ghana’s democratic framework.

As the Judiciary Committee sat to assess the qualifications and outlook of Justice Dzamefe, Lawyer Mmieh used the platform to reinforce the critical role of judicial transparency and openness to public scrutiny. He cautioned that in a maturing democracy like Ghana’s, judicial independence must go hand-in-hand with accountability to the people.

Lawyer Mmieh noted that while the judiciary must remain independent from political interference, it must not be insulated from public interest or critical media attention.

He acknowledged the difficult balance judges must strike between impartiality and responsiveness but argued that accountability mechanisms, including media scrutiny, are essential for maintaining public confidence in the justice system..

Lawyer Anthony Mmieh, a respected legal practitioner and legislator representing the Odotobri Constituency, has increasingly been seen as a voice for integrity and reform within the Judiciary Committee. His focus on media freedom and judicial openness marks a broader trend within Parliament where younger lawmakers are advocating for institutional accountability and transparency.

As Vice Chair of the Judiciary Committee, Mmieh is expected to play a key role in shaping legislative responses to concerns about the justice sector, especially as Ghana heads into another election cycle.

Justice Dzamefe’s nomination is expected to be approved by Parliament following the committee’s report. However, the broader issues raised by Lawyer Mmieh are likely to remain central to national dialogue, particularly as public trust in democratic institutions continues to face challenges.
