NPP’s Early Primaries: It’s a dangerous precedent, if we do not elect a good leader (Flagbearer), he will come and choose the executive he wants – Kwasi Kwarteng

Kwasi Kwarteng, a leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has raised serious concerns about the party’s decision to hold early primaries, calling it a “very dangerous precedent.”
Speaking on Kessben FM in Accra with Kwadwo Preko Dankwah, Kwarteng warned that the early selection of a flagbearer could shift the power dynamics within the party, giving undue influence to one individual and potentially undermining the democratic processes of internal party elections.
The NPP has officially set January 2026 as the date for its presidential primaries, a decision that has sparked debate within party circles and among political analysts.
According to Kwarteng, electing a flagbearer too early could allow that individual to wield disproportionate influence in shaping the party’s future leadership. He fears that the flagbearer, once in place, could strategically maneuver to install loyalists into key executive positions during subsequent internal elections, a scenario he believes would erode the checks and balances that have historically characterized the NPP’s internal governance.
The party, currently in opposition following its 2024 electoral defeat, is under pressure to present a united and strategically sound front ahead of the 2028 general elections. The move to fix the primaries for early 2026 is seen by some as a way to give the eventual flagbearer enough time to campaign, mobilize support, and rebuild the party’s national appeal.
