“We always bash Politicians for corruption, but some civil servants are more dangerous” – Wofa Kofi Appiah

Wofa Kofi Appiah of Kessben FM/TV, has made a bold statement that challenges the typical narrative surrounding corruption in Ghana.
In a recent on-air discussion, Wofa Kofi Appiah remarked that the nation’s fight against corruption is too narrowly focused on political office holders, often overlooking the deeply rooted inefficiencies and misconduct within the public service system.
His statement underscores a critical, yet often ignored, reality: civil servants hold the permanent keys to the state machinery. Unlike politicians, who face periodic elections and limited terms, civil servants can remain in their roles for decades.
This longevity grants them influence and institutional memory that surpass even the most powerful politicians.
While politicians are often the faces of corruption scandals, he argues that many are also victims of the structures they inherit. “By the time a minister takes office,” he said, “the people who really run the ministry have already found ways to entrench their interests. If you’re not careful, they’ll sabotage you or draw you into their ways.”
