Hussein Ibrahim, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Ashanti Regional Communication Team, accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government of exploiting the COVID-19 pandemic as a “corruption bonanza” to enrich themselves.

He argued that the funds allocated for pandemic relief were misused, depriving the economy of vital support during a critical periodds

Ibrahim speaking on Kessben TV said despite the global financial challenges posed by the pandemic, Ghana received substantial financial support to mitigate its effects.

According to the Auditor-General, Ghana mobilized approximately GH¢21.8 billion between 2020 and 2022 from various sources, including the World Bank, IMF, and the African Development Bank . However, he claimed that these funds were diverted for election-related expenditures rather than being utilized for their intended purpose of economic stabilization.

The NDC communicator criticized the NPP government for its fiscal policies during the pandemic. He noted that while neighboring countries managed their resources prudently, Ghana recorded a budget deficit of 15.7% in 2020, attributed to excessive borrowing and election-driven spending .

In contrast, countries like Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, and Nigeria maintained deficits below 8%, despite facing similar challenges.

Ibrahim and the NDC have consistently demanded accountability for the alleged mismanagement of COVID-19 funds.
