President Mahama Seeks EU Support for Technology-Driven Defense Industry

President John Dramani Mahama has called for European Union support to develop a technology-driven defense industry in Ghana. Addressing the Ghana-European Union dialogue at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President Mahama highlighted Ghana’s role as a beacon of peace in West Africa and the need for urgent action against the growing threat of violent extremism.

The President emphasized the EU’s support under the European Peace Facility, including non-lethal military equipment. However, he seeks EU collaboration in developing a resilient and technology-driven defense industry to support national security and industrialization.

President Mahama mentioned initiatives like the GARSI Sahel project and the ECOWAS Stabilization Agenda, which can help fortify regional security and combat terrorism, support democratic governance, and promote energy transition and green growth in the sub-region.

Ghana is also working towards a sustainable energy future, with a plan to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060 through a diversified mix of renewable energy and natural gas. President Mahama expressed hope that Ghana can leverage the EU-supported Just Energy Transition Partnership to scale up solar, wind, and green hydrogen financing.

By collaborating with the EU, Ghana aims to enhance its national security, industrialization, and energy transition, ultimately promoting economic growth and development.
