“It’s not your salary that makes you rich, but your spending habits” – Educationist, George Akom

Renowned educationist George Akom has stirred meaningful conversation about personal finance and wealth-building with a bold yet practical assertion

Mr. Akom, speaking on Kessben FM’s Maakye with KOD, stated, “It is not your salary that will make you rich, but your spending habit,” emphasizing that true financial success lies not in how much one earns, but in how wisely one manages money.

Mr Akom’s comment comes at a time when many Ghanaians, particularly public sector workers like teachers, express frustration over stagnant wages.

He stressed that without the right financial mindset and habits, even large incomes can disappear quickly. Conversely, individuals who earn less but spend wisely, save consistently, and invest intelligently are often the ones who accumulate lasting wealth.

He cited examples of civil servants who, despite earning average incomes, have been able to acquire properties, fund their children’s education, and even run small businesses on the side — all due to disciplined financial habits.

He encouraged teachers to take personal finance seriously, suggesting they seek basic financial literacy, create budgets, and avoid unnecessary debt.
