“Celebrate fathers wholly, just like mothers” – Rev. Vincent Kankam (Sofo Kankam) calls for a shift

Reverend Vincent Kankam, a respected clergyman and social commentator, has raised a thoughtful concern ahead of this year’s Father’s Day celebrations. Speaking on Kessben FM, Rev. Kankam questioned the recurring trend where Father’s Day is often overshadowed by criticism and negative narratives about absentee or irresponsible fathers, even as Mother’s Day is celebrated with unreserved praise and admiration.
“There are also negative sides of mothers,” Rev. Kankam stated. “But on Mother’s Day, we choose to celebrate them wholly with love, with gratitude, with honor. Why then, during Father’s Day, do some people focus on the shortfalls of fathers instead of celebrating their efforts?”
Rev. Kankam’s remarks shine a spotlight on what many perceive as a cultural imbalance in how parental roles are celebrated. While acknowledging that there are indeed fathers who have fallen short of their responsibilities, he emphasized that this should not be the focus of a day meant to honor all fathers, just as society does not use Mother’s Day to highlight maternal shortcomings.
Rev. Kankam called for a shift in narrative, urging society to give fathers the recognition they deserve. He highlighted the countless men who work tirelessly to provide, protect, and guide their families, often in silence and without the expectation of applause.
He emphasized that fatherhood, like motherhood, is a demanding and sacrificial role that deserves acknowledgment. Many fathers, he noted, serve as the backbone of their homes, instilling discipline, offering support, and serving as role models to their children.
Rev. Kankam urged the media, churches, schools, and families to use Father’s Day as an opportunity to uplift, appreciate, and affirm the role of fathers in society, not to critique or compare.
