“If you follow the right way of mining, the NDC government will not have any problem with you” – Hon Ibrahim Nelson, Ahafo Ano Sout East DCE

The District Chief Executive (DCE) of Ahafo Ano South East, Mr. Ibrahim Nelson, has issued a strong message regarding illegal mining activities, commonly known as Galamsey.

Speaking in an interview on Kessben FM, he emphasized that a future National Democratic Congress (NDC) government would fully support lawful mining operations but would deal decisively with anyone engaged in illegal practices.

According to Hon Ibrahim, the NDC is not against mining as an economic activity. Instead, he clarified that the party is committed to responsible and sustainable mining that benefits communities and protects the environment.

“If you follow the right way of mining, the NDC government will not have any problem with you. But if you go into illegal mining, Galamsey, you will be dealt with firmly,” he stated.

Nelson explained that legal mining provides jobs, supports local development, and contributes to national revenue. He praised small-scale miners who operate within the law and meet the necessary environmental and safety regulations. However, he warned that galamsey, which often involves the destruction of water bodies and forest reserves, would not be tolerated.

“Illegal mining is not just an environmental issue it’s a threat to public health, agriculture, and future generations. We cannot allow it to continue under the excuse of making a living,” he added.

The DCE assured that the NDC’s approach would focus on creating a clear and supportive regulatory framework for mining. This includes streamlining the licensing process, offering technical training, and ensuring miners understand the legal routes to operate.

“We know many young people depend on mining for survival. That’s why we need to help them transition into legal operations. The government will support those who want to do the right thing,” he said.

Hon Ibrahim also sent a clear warning to political actors and community leaders who might shield illegal miners for personal gain. He stressed that under an NDC administration, there would be no room for favoritism or political interference in the fight against galamsey.
