Nurses and Midwives Strike:  The 2024 election pressure made the NPP agree all those conditions with the Nurses and Midwives – Hon Akuoko Frimpong

Hon. Ebenezer Akuoko Frimpong, the former District Chief Executive (DCE) for Sekyere Central, has stated that the ongoing strike by nurses and midwives is a consequence of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government’s pre-election commitments made under pressure.

Speaking on Kessben FM’s Maakye Show, Akuoko Frimpong indicated that the government’s decision to agree to various demands from healthcare professionals was influenced by the political climate leading up to the 2024 elections.

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) initiated the strike to protest the government’s failure to fulfill promises made during the election period. These promises included improved allowances, better working conditions, and the posting of qualified nurses who had been waiting for employment.

The strike has brought attention to the healthcare sector’s issues, including understaffing, inadequate resources, and unmet promises, which have been exacerbated by the political pressures of the election period.

As the strike continues, it remains to be seen how the government will address the concerns of the nurses and midwives to restore normalcy in the healthcare system.
