Dɔte Yie: Final Day of Mamponghene’s funeral underway in Mampong; Asantehene set to arrive

The final day of the funeral rites for the late Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, is currently underway in Mampong, Ashanti Region. The ceremony, known as the ‘Dɔte Yie,’ is a significant traditional event that marks the conclusion of the mourning period for the paramount chief.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, who passed away in April 2025 at the age of 86, served as the Mamponghene and the krontihene (Duke) of Asante. He was also the custodian of the Silver Stool of Asanteman, making him the second-highest-ranking traditional leader in the Ashanti Kingdom. His passing has left a profound impact on the Mampong Traditional Area and the entire Ashanti Region.

The final day of the funeral rites is expected to be attended by several dignitaries, including the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and President John Dramani Mahama. Their presence underscores the importance of the event and the respect held for the late Mamponghene.

The funeral rites have been marked by a series of solemn ceremonies, including the filing past the body, traditional dances, and the offering of tributes by various chiefs and queen mothers from the Ashanti and Bono regions. The widow and daughter of the late Mamponghene have also been seen mourning their loved one in an atmosphere of solemnity.
