A serious strategy has been mapped out to deal with drivers who have still not reduced transport fares – Kwabre East MCE, Hon. Joseph Amankwah

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kwabre East, Hon. Joseph Amankwah, has issued a strong warning to commercial drivers and their conductors (mates) who have failed to comply with the recently announced 15% reduction in transport fares.

Speaking on Kessben FM, the MCE made it clear that his office has mapped out a strategy to ensure full compliance, stressing that drivers have been given a two-week ultimatum to adjust their fares or face sanctions.

He noted that while fuel prices have dropped, prompting the 15% fare reduction as announced by the Transport Operators Union and approved by the government, several drivers in the Kwabre East Municipality continue to charge the old fares, causing public frustration and undermining government efforts to ease the cost of living.

Without revealing every detail, Hon. Amankwah confirmed that his office, in collaboration with the Kwabre East Assembly, the Police, and the Transport Unions, has developed a strategy to monitor transport stations, trotro routes, and key pick-up points. He emphasized that enforcement teams will be deployed after the grace period.

The MCE also hinted at possible penalties for non-compliant drivers, including fines, temporary suspension of operating licenses, and even impoundment of vehicles if necessary.

He also encouraged passengers to speak up when they are being overcharged and assured the public that complaints will be taken seriously.
