The dollar would have reached 25 cedis today had the NPP won the 2024 election under Bawumia, because their excuse of the Russia-Ukraine war is there and intense now – Hon Biribireba Boateng

Hon. Nana Biribireba Boateng, a prominent figure within the NDC, has touched on Ghana’s economic growth under the NDC government.
Hon Boateng speaking on Kessben TV claimed had the NPP, led by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, won the election, the cedi would have depreciated even further, possibly hitting 25 cedis to a dollar.
The Russia-Ukraine war, which began in early 2022, has often been cited by the NPP administration, especially Dr. Bawumia, who served as Vice President and head of the Economic Management Team, as a key reason for the country’s economic hardships. The war, they argued, disrupted global supply chains and pushed up prices of fuel, fertilizer, and food, placing undue pressure on Ghana’s economy.
However, critics have accused the NPP leadership of overusing the conflict as a scapegoat, pointing instead to domestic mismanagement, ballooning debt, and weak fiscal discipline. Boateng’s statement appears to echo that sentiment, suggesting that structural issues at home, rather than foreign events, are primarily to blame for the cedi’s free fall.
The NPP lost the 2024 general elections to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by John Dramani Mahama, in what many viewed as a referendum on economic hardship, rising cost of living, and public dissatisfaction with the government’s performance..
