Ghana Commemorates 77th International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers

Ghana joined the world in commemorating the 77th International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers on May 29, 2025. The occasion was marked with a flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremony at the State House in Accra, where dignitaries, diplomats, and security officials gathered to pay tribute to the bravery and sacrifices of UN peacekeepers.

Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu’s Statement

Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications, paid tribute to the extraordinary courage of peacekeepers who serve on the frontlines of conflict, fostering peace and restoring hope for millions in challenging situations worldwide. He emphasized the importance of strengthening partnerships and multilateralism to meet the peacekeeping challenges of tomorrow.

Key areas of focus include:
Enhancing Collaboration: Strengthening partnerships between the UN and regional organizations like the African Union.
Training and Capacity Building: Expanding proactive collaboration between the UN and national, regional, and international peacekeeping training networks.
– *Resource Mobilization*: Ensuring peacekeeping missions receive necessary political support, resources, and clear mandates.

The Minister called for collective action to fully resource missions, equip them with robust mandates, and stand united with peacekeepers who risk their lives to protect civilians.

Mr. Osama Makkawi’s Statement

Mr. Osama Makkawi, Resident Coordinator ad interim & Representative of UNICEF Ghana, paid tribute to the 57 peacekeepers who lost their lives in 2024, including two Ghanaian soldiers, Sergeant Evans Kyere and Warrant Officer II David Kwame Amankwah. He emphasized that peacekeeping cannot succeed in isolation and that building lasting partnerships is essential to respond effectively to collective challenges.

The theme of this year’s observance, “The Future of Peacekeeping: Strengthening Partnership and Multilateralism in Ghana and Beyond,” highlights the importance of collaboration and multilateral engagement in achieving peace and security. Mr. Makkawi praised Ghana’s commitment to global peace and security and congratulated Squadron Leader Sharon Syme on receiving the 2024 Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award.

Ghana’s Contribution to UN Peacekeeping

Ghana has a long history of contributing to UN peacekeeping efforts and currently ranks 7th among 122 troop-contributing countries. Both speakers acknowledged Ghana’s commitment to global peace and security, demonstrating global solidarity in action and service to humanity.

Call to Action

The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, emphasized the need for peacekeepers to be equipped with modern tools and resources to address complex security challenges. He also highlighted the importance of investing in long-term peacebuilding efforts that address root causes, promote good governance, and rebuild trust in post-conflict societies.
