WOMEC Calls for Collective Action to Create a Period-Friendly World

As the world marks Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025, Women, Media and Change (WOMEC) is joining the global community to reaffirm its commitment to creating a world where menstruation is no longer a source of shame, silence, or inequality. The theme for this year’s celebration, “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld,” highlights the urgency of collective action to ensure that no girl or woman is left behind because of her period.
Menstrual Health: A Fundamental Human Right
WOMEC believes that access to menstrual health is a fundamental human right, not a privilege. Yet, across Ghana and many parts of the world, menstruation remains shrouded in stigma, preventing girls from attending school, restricting women’s participation in public life, and undermining their health, dignity, and confidence.
The Power of Media in Promoting Menstrual Health
WOMEC envisions a society where media serves as a powerful tool to dismantle harmful myths, educate communities, and advocate for inclusive menstrual health policies. Through storytelling, awareness campaigns, and dialogue, the organization aims to challenge cultural taboos and normalize conversations about menstruation in homes, schools, workplaces, and across all media platforms.
Investing in Education, Empathy, and Equity
To achieve a truly period-friendly world, WOMEC emphasizes the need to invest in education, empathy, and equity. This includes education that empowers young people with accurate knowledge about their bodies, empathy that fosters supportive environments for menstruating individuals, and equity that ensures access to menstrual products, clean water, and hygienic facilities.
A Call to Action
As WOMEC renews its dedication to building platforms that empower girls, amplify women’s voices, and push for a future where menstrual health is seen not as a side issue, but as central to gender equality and social justice, the organization calls on everyone to stand together, speak up, and act for a #PeriodFriendly World.
By working together, WOMEC believes that it is possible to create a world where menstruation is no longer a source of shame or inequality, but rather a natural part of life that is celebrated and supported.
