Nurses and Midwives to go on strike next week if Gov’t fails to honour promises on conditions of service

Jones Afriyie-Anto, Chairman of the Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), has issued a stern warning to the government regarding the non-fulfilment of promises related to the conditions of service for nurses.

Speaking on Kessben FM, Afriyie-Anto emphasized that if the government does not adhere to its commitments, the association will be compelled to initiate industrial action.

Afriyie-Anto highlighted several key issues that remain unresolved:

He said despite negotiations, the promised rural incentive allowance for nurses working in underserved areas has not been implemented. This allowance is crucial to attract and retain healthcare professionals in remote regions.

Afriyie-Anto stressed that the government’s failure to honour this promise is detrimental to the healthcare system.

Afriyie-Anto called on the government to prioritise the health needs of health workers by fulfilling this commitment.

Afriyie-Anto warned that the government’s failure to meet these obligations will not be tolerated. He stated that the GRNMA will not hesitate to mobilise its members for industrial action if the promises are not honoured. This stance reflects the growing frustration among nurses and midwives who feel their contributions are undervalued.
