NPP’s Alfred Ababio Kumi Arrested by National Investigation Bureau

Alfred Ababio Kumi, also known as Adenta Kumi, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was picked up from his residence by armed security personnel believed to be from the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) on Friday, May 23, 2025. The arrest comes days after Kumi petitioned President John Mahama to dissolve the committee probing Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Circumstances Surrounding the Arrest

According to Kumi’s wife on Kessben Maakye Morning show, about eight armed operatives arrived at the residence while her husband was taking his bath. They claimed they wanted to speak with him but ended up taking him away, damaging doors in the process. The family is still trying to determine his whereabouts.

Background to the Arrest

Kumi had recently alleged that two members of the five-member committee investigating the Chief Justice were seen dining with a lawyer representing one of the petitioners, Thaddeus Sory, in a secret meeting captured on CCTV footage. This led him to petition the presidency to dissolve the committee, citing compromised integrity.

Reactions from NPP Leaders

The arrest has sparked reactions from NPP leaders, including General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, who urged patriots to rush to Kumi’s house. Kodua’s call came after over 20 CID and National Security officers were reportedly at Kumi’s residence.

No Official Reason Given

As of now, no official reason has been given for Kumi’s arrest. His family is preparing to visit the NIB office to locate him. The development has raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding Kumi’s arrest and the potential implications for the ongoing probe into the Chief Justice.
