Ashanti Regional NADMO begins desilting of 17 choked gutters and drains – Regional Director Alhaji Mohammed Nasir Ibrahim leads cleanup campaign

The Ashanti Regional branch of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has launched a massive desilting exercise across 17 identified flood-prone areas. The operation, spearheaded by the Ashanti Regional NADMO Director, Alhaji Mohammed Nasir Ibrahim, officially commenced this week with boots on the ground and a strong message of community responsibility.
The campaign targets major choked gutters and drainage systems within Kumasi and other urban centers in the Ashanti Region, where poor waste disposal habits and years of neglect have caused blockages, increasing the risk of devastating floods during heavy rainfall.
Alhaji Mohammed Nasir Ibrahim, known for his hands-on leadership style, was seen in the thick of the action, walking through debris-filled drains, supervising excavation works, and engaging with local residents. Dressed in NADMO-branded gear and safety boots, he led by example, urging residents to support the campaign and maintain clean surroundings.
We cannot wait for disaster to strike before we act,” Alhaji Ibrahim told reporters at one of the sites in Kumasi. “This exercise is not just about clearing drains. It is about saving lives, protecting livelihoods, and instilling a culture of cleanliness and responsibility in our communities.”
The 17 targeted locations include major trouble spots such as Aboabo, Asawase, Bantama, Anloga Junction, Santasi, and Tafo, among others, areas that have historically recorded serious flooding incidents due to blocked drainage channels.
In addition to the physical cleanup, the NADMO team is engaging local leaders, market traders, and residents in education and sensitization efforts. Alhaji Ibrahim issued a stern warning to individuals who indiscriminately dump waste into drains.
The exercise is being carried out in collaboration with the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), the Environmental Health Department, and Zoomlion Ghana Limited. Local assemblymen and unit committee leaders have also joined the effort, signaling a united front in tackling the sanitation menace.
As the desilting campaign gains momentum, Alhaji Ibrahim stressed the need for sustainability. He proposed the establishment of local community monitoring groups to ensure that cleaned drains remain waste-free throughout the year.
