Ghana’s Agricultural Future: Experts Call for Tech-Driven Solutions

Ghanaian experts are sounding the alarm on the need for urgent innovation in the country’s agricultural sector. At the recent Graphic Business/Stanbic Bank Breakfast Meeting in Accra, themed “Future of Food: The Critical Place of Sustainable Practices,” industry leaders emphasized the importance of integrating advanced technologies to future-proof Ghana’s agriculture.

Harnessing Technology for Sustainable Agriculture
Professor Kester Quist-Aphetsi, Chairman of the National Cyber Intelligence and Cyber Defense Research Project, advocated for the adoption of technologies like artificial intelligence, precision agriculture, and data analytics. He believes these tools can help address pressing issues like rising population and dwindling arable land.

“Our conditions are different from theirs, and we have to understand our environment and develop the technologies to preserve our food,” Professor Quist-Aphetsi emphasized. He called for greater investment in local technology solutions tailored to Ghana’s unique environment.

Empowering Youth and Traditional Leaders
Alberta Nana Akyaa Akosa, founder of Agrihouse Foundation, highlighted the crucial role of youth and traditional leaders in advancing Ghana’s agricultural sustainability agenda. She advocated for structural investments to harness their potential and proposed a regional value chain development strategy.

Addressing Key Challenges
Prof. Francis Atsu warned of severe threats from galamsey, land degradation, and climate issues, stressing that sustainability is the way forward. Experts agree that a tech-driven approach can help Ghana overcome these challenges and ensure food security.

By embracing innovation and technology, Ghana can build a more sustainable agricultural sector and secure its food future.
