“Afenyo‑Markin’s Police Confrontation Could Signal Green Light for Attacks on Security Personnel, Warns Tuffuor”

Dr. Isaac Tuffuor, a member of the NDC’s Ashanti Regional team, has strongly condemned Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo‑Markin’s recent physical altercation with a police officer during the “Save the Judiciary” protest, cautioning that such actions risk opening the door tonchecked security-personnel brutality.

Video footage from the demonstration shows Mr. Afenyo‑Markin raising his hand against an officer as demonstrators sought to serve their petition to Parliament and the Presidency.

Though Dr. Tuffuor acknowledged that the 1992 Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to peaceful protest, he stressed that demonstrations must remain lawful and orderly. “Everyone has the right to embark on a demonstration under the 1992 Constitution,” Dr. Tuffuor said, “but it must be carried out in a right and law‑abiding manner.”

Dr. Tuffuor has called on the Ghana Police Service, parliamentary authorities, and other relevant bodies to launch a thorough investigation into the incident and to impose appropriate sanctions.

He argued that decisive action would both uphold the rule of law and serve as a strong deterrent against any future attacks on security personnel, thereby protecting citizens’ right to peaceful civic engagement.
